不同的只是結局，有的分道揚鑣，有的貌合神離。上帝是個促狹鬼，在人的本性中加入了見異思遷的材料。男人固然是花心搖搖，女人又何嘗不是喜新厭舊呢？不過，女人心軟，性弱，害怕承擔離散以后的痛苦，多選擇忍受之途罷了。然而，無論是散是忍，變異卻會給戀愛的雙方帶來難以名狀的痛苦、怨恨?！凹扔薪袢眨伪禺敵?？”倘若再細細咀嚼、剖析發生變異的各種原因，那就不只是痛苦而是恐懼了。你會發現赤裸裸的人性原來是那兒丑惡。
The differences are in the outcomes. Some couples go their separate ways, some remain husbands and wives only in name. God mischievously added the element of unfaithfulness to human nature. Men are guilty of fickleness, to be sure, but women are not necessarily constant in their love, either. Women tend to be too soft-hearted, weak, and fearful of the post-separation pain to choose any other alternative than endurance. But in fact, a change of heart, whether ending in separation or endurance, will bring both parties indescribable pain and rancor. “Had I known things would come to this, why did I do what I did in the first place?” Mull over and analyze the various causes for your change of heart and you will find that beyond pain and fear, there is also the naked ugliness of human nature.
愛情還要承擔許多與愛情無關的重負。西方人可能好一些，能夠把愛情只當作兩個人的事情。
Love has to bear other burdens unrelated to love. This is probably less true of Westerners who take love as something between two lovers only.
可是在東方，尤其是在中國，愛情從來都不是兩個人的私事，甚至不單是感情問題。情侶還沒有從熱戀的夢中醒來，便被許多親友怨敵編織進一張巨大的網里，無論你如何攀、爬、掙扎，終于掙不出網去，除非你準備付出沉重的代價?？墒怯袝r候代價太大，你愿意付也付不起。你只眼睜睜地讓愛情死在網里，這樣的愛情悲劇在中國實在太多了。倘若寫小說，自然是順當的，人物故事不但現成，而且稀奇古怪，頗有藝術魅力。然而，小說給人的啟示卻是難矣哉，戀愛！很可能會嚇退正在做夢的癡男怨女。
But in the East, especially in China, love has never been something private between two individuals. It involves more than emotions. Before lovers wake up from their dream of passionate love they are woven into a huge net by their kith and kin, their friends and enemies. However hard they clamber and crawl, lovers are unable to struggle out of it without paying prices beyond their abilities to pay. They are left to watch helplessly as their love dies in the net. There is no lack of such tragedies in China. This fact makes a novelist’s job easy, because not only are the characters and story already there, but the plot is also fanciful and replete with artistic appeal. But the moral of the story – Love means trouble! – will probably scare off pining lovers even in the midst of their dreams.
