1 or not放在whether之后時，只能用whether不用if。
I don’t know whether or not he will come. 我不知道他是不是回來。
注1：如果or not放在whether所引導的從句句尾，則可以用if來替換。
I don’t know whether/if he will come or not.我不知道他是不是回來。
2 在強調任意選擇時,用whether…or,此時不用if替換whether。
He asked me whether I wanted to go there by train or by bus.他問我是想乘火車還是坐公共汽車去那里。
注：whether和or一起還有“不管”之意,引導讓步狀語從句。
Whether he drives or takes the train, he will be here on time.不管開車來還是乘火車來，他都會準時到。
3 雖引導賓語從句，但為了強調賓語部分，也可把從句放在句首，此時只用whether不用if。
Whether he will come I am not sure.他是不是來我拿不準。
4 從句作介詞賓語時只用whether不用if。
It depends on whether it will be fine.那得看是不是晴天。
5 作discuss等動詞的賓語時，用whether不用if。
We discussed whether we should close the shop.我們討論是不是該關掉商店。
6 句子中有if引導的條件句，如再有表示“是否”的賓語從句，用whether不用if。
He asked me whether I’d move to New York if I got the job.他問我如果我得到那份工作是否會搬家到紐約。
7 容易產生歧義時用whether不用if來表示“是否”。

8 如果賓語從句為否定句時，則只用if不用whether。

二、在引導主語從句、表語從句、同位語從句時一般用whether不用if。如：
⑴Whether it is true remains a question.(主語從句)那是不是真的還是個問題。
⑵The question is whether it is true.(表語從句)問題是是不是真的。
⑶We have a doubt whether it is true.(同位語從句) 我們懷疑那是不是真的。
注:whether引導主語從句放在主句之后時可用if來代替。
It is unclear whether/if he likes the present.他是不是喜歡那個禮物還不清楚。
三、用在動詞不定式之前時用whether不用if。
I don’t know whether to go there at once. 我不知道是不是該立刻去那里。
